Another picture of me presenting my lecture

For the past 13 years I conduct an Annual Postgraduate Course on Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Gynecology.  The last one was held on April 3, 2009 at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC.  Each year we have an overwhelming attendance, this year we had 350 attendees.  The Course is important because the subject is not taught because it is multidiscipline.  Each year we have numerous physicians lecturing on various subjects, this year included tales of the adolescent uterus, pathology of the uterus, primary and secondary amenorrhea, contraception for women with medical problems, sexual transmitted infections, diagnosis and management of human papilloma virus (HPV), dysplasia and vaccination, congenital anomalies which confuse us, general and sexual molestation, herpes infection in the HIV patient and vulvitis.

My new book just published

This is a unique book based on the unusual educational experience of personally conductive clinics in pediatric and adolescent gynecology at 3 hospitals and a continuing private office consultation over many years.

The subject is not taught because it is multidiscipline.  Our gynecology residents rarely or never see young patients and vice versa for pediatric residents.

The young patient is completely different than the traditional mature woman in all aspects and requires special expertise.

In the future it will be taught because it is important for patient care and because the American Boards of Specialties Examination for Obstetrics-Gynecology, and Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine now have questions on it.

The book emphasizes the approach to the young patient, including the psychologic aspects.  There is always anxiety.  Each patient is different.

In addition to standard subjects such as menstrual disturbances, vulvo-vaginitis, tumors, hormonal problems, etc.  The book has unique contents such as the concept of "education for life", and avoiding school drop outs.  It is the only book with newly published reports of discoveries by Dr. Altchek of atopic dermatitis of the vulva; prepubertal, distal longitudinal vaginal folds (which may mimic molestation); and unilateral labia majora tumor (which may mimic a malignant tumor).

There is a lengthy chapter about Rokitansky syndrome (MRKH syndrome) of congenital absence of the vagina and uterus based on an extensive personal experience including psychologic management and a large personal series of the most common surgical procedure in the USA for treatment.

The contributing authors are experienced.  Clinical teachers who have emphasized diagnosis and management.

The Foreward of the book was written by Dr. Alan DeCherney, Head, Program in Reproductive and Adult Endocrinology, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health.

The philosophy of the book is illustrated by the happy faces on the cover.
